Female Football Tournament 2023
Introduction
Empowering African Women Through the Power of Sport
At Young Voices of Africa, we believe empowerment takes many forms, and sport is one of the most powerful. On December 24th, 2023, we hosted the Female Football Tournament as a bold and spirited expression of gender equality, youth engagement, and community solidarity.
More than a game, this tournament was a platform for young African women and girls to raise their voices, build confidence, and inspire change, all through the energy and unity of football.

"They play. They lead. They inspire a new Africa."
About the Project
The Female Football Tournament was designed to amplify the voices of young African women by placing them in a visible, respected, and celebratory space, the football field. It provided a vibrant prelude to our Annual General Conference held on December 30th, 2023, bringing communities together in anticipation and solidarity.
Set in Sierra Leone, the event welcomed teams of young women who not only showcased their athletic talent but also stood as role models, challenging societal norms and breaking barriers around gender in sports and leadership.
This initiative reflects our broader mission to unleash the power of youth and promote gender equality, using sport as a tool to unify, inspire, and drive long-term change.
Key Highlights
From the opening whistle to the final cheer, the tournament was filled with passion, teamwork, and empowerment. Players, families, and community members gathered in celebration, creating an inclusive atmosphere that brought together people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities.
The event encouraged open dialogue on women’s rights, representation, and participation in non-traditional spaces, while fostering leadership skills, confidence, and visibility for the young women involved.
By turning the football pitch into a platform for expression, the tournament proved that when women are given the space to lead and play, they transform not just the game but also their communities.
Closing Note
The Female Football Tournament stands as a testament to what happens when young women are empowered to take up space and own their stories. It was more than a sporting event; it was a call to action, a celebration of resilience, and a symbol of unity.
As we continue building toward a brighter future for Africa, Young Voices of Africa remains committed to creating bold, creative, and inclusive spaces where youth, especially girls, can thrive, lead, and rise.
